Ebook About
A unique and intimate memoir about adoption, prejudice and shared destiny, thousands of miles from home. For years Ruth Spira never even dreamed of motherhood and children. She was left a young widow when her husband was killed in Israel’s Yom Kippur war in 1973, and she chose not to remarry. At the age of forty something began to stir within—the desire to become a mother made itself increasingly heard with each passing day. Her age and the decision to stop long and draining fertility treatments, eventually lead her to the other side of the world - to Vietnam. In an honest and moving book, Ruth describes the process she went through—from the moment she decided to adopt, through the difficult months she spent in Vietnam, the immediate connection between her and her new baby, Lien, and the process of acclimation back home, along with other hurdles she encountered. This extraordinary book raises important and essential questions about parenthood, cross-border and cross-culture adoption, single motherhood, prejudice, racism, the role fate plays in our lives and the inexplicable feeling of love a parent feels for her child.

Book The Same Moon: A Touching Memoir About Intercountry Adoption in Vietnam and Unconditional Love Review :

I adopted my youngest daughter from Russia around the time that the author adopted her daughter in Vietnam. I was confounded as to why the author never went through an adoption agency. If she had, most probably she would not had the problems that she did. I also adopted three other children; two more internationally, and always went through an adoption agency. I hasten to add that I am not at all familiar with the policies and procedures in Israel. However, I was astounded that the author relied upon an attorney in Israel for an international adoption. Indeed, would it not have been a good idea to have researched a Vietnamese adoption more thoroughly? This book is difficult to read for the ongoing onslaught that Americans take throughout the book. It’s hard to understand why the author needed to go on and on and on about the Americans and the war. I wanted to scream just deal with it! Indeed it was over for many years. What was the point??Having gone through an adoption, as stated, during the same period of time the author did, but in Russia, we experienced much the same discomfort. Sure the water ran brown; post -communist Russia was pretty scary; and oh so much more! The hotels in the areas that we had to go to travel back-and-forth throughout Russia were quite nasty! But the people of Russia made up for it all. And most important, and the star of the show, was my dear darling daughter!!! And for me, all the discomfort, the stress, the shock at times at the poverty of this country, melted away when I met my daughter.
I must be the only American who has tried to read this book, otherwise, there could not be such rave reviews. I am only 49% through and cannot take another word about what the Americans did to Vietnam! I expected to read a heartwarming story about a woman with a enough love in her heart to adopt a child from a foreign country, but what I read was grousing about the conditions, power outages, what Americans did there, slow serve, loud noises, not knowing who to trust, and on and on and on. Although, the author must have gotten a kickback from a certain hotel chain because she highly recommended them many times.. I have stayed in that hotel chain while in Europe and, indeed, they are first class, but I do not expect to read advertisements in books I read for pleasure. It might get better in the second half, but I have better things waiting to be read!
